The London Sewerage System

The London Sewerage System

The London sewage system is part of the water infrastructure serving London, England. The modern system was developed during the late 19th century, and as London has grown the system has been expanded. During the early 19th century, London used the River Thames as an open sewer which due to the citys growth, became outdated and started causing a foul stench and disastrous consequences for public health in London. A civil engineer by the name of Joseph Bazalgette took over the job of building this underground infrastructure. He built a modern sewer system that purified the city and resulted in the end of the epidemics of cholera and typhoid that had sickened the population.

The First Transcontinental Railroad

Old time Railroads

The First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States was built in the 1860s. It is considered one of the greatest technological feats of the 19th century to take place in America. It served as a vital link for commerce, trade and travel. It replaced the stagecoach and wagon trains for a safer journey across the nation. The main line was officially completed on May 10, 1869. The vast number of people who traveled the line, and the network that followed, set the USA on the path to economic abundance. It also ended the centuries old way of life of the Native Americans and greatly altered the environment.

The rail line was an important goal of President Abraham Lincoln, fostered during the early portion of his term and completed four years after his death. The building of the railroad was motivated in part to bind California to the Union during the American Civil War. The railroad is considered by some to be the greatest technological feat of the 19th century. The transcontinental railroad replaced the slower and more dangerous wagon trains, Pony Express and stagecoach lines that crossed the country by land and the equally difficult sea journey around the southern tip of South America.

The route followed the well established Oregon, Mormon and California Trails. The new line began in Omaha, Nebraska, followed the Platte River, crossed the Rocky Mountains at South Pass in Wyoming and then through northern Utah and Nevada before crossing the Sierras to Sacramento, California. Additional track was laid to connect Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah and other cities not directly on the route.

Bandar Bola – The Central Pacific laid 690 miles (1,110 km) of track, starting in Sacramento, and the Union Pacific laid 1,087 miles (1,749 km) of track, starting in Omaha. The two lines connected at Promontory Summit, Utah.

The Panama Canal

The Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is one of the largest most difficult engineering feats ever to have been built in the world. Its primary intention is to shorten the distance of travel for trading vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans saving time, money, and the heartache of traveling around the southern tip of South America. Its about fifty miles long and takes about 8-10 hours to travel the total distance. Since being built, the canal has been considered a success and continues to be a vital aspect to world trade, carrying more cargo than ever before.

During the early 19th century, London used the River Thames as an open sewer which due to the citys growth, became outdated and started causing a foul stench and disastrous consequences for public health in London. A civil engineer by the name of Joseph Bazalgette took over the job of building this underground infrastructure. The prime speech railway lines and back-to-back LGV Nord were connected with this tunnel.  This tunnel is enlisted as Modern world’s seven wonders by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1996.

Channel Tunnels

At the begining of 1802, this idea of made an appearance in the mind for building cross-Channel permanent connection, but press pressure and British political pressure over national security slowed down lower the attempt of construction of the tunnel.  In year 1988, the eventual construction of Eurotunnel project begins and it ended up being began in 1994.  Using its predicted budget, the project came over 80%.  This tunnel has find a lot of problems throughout its construction.  The whole process of tunnel was disrupted by the fire.  This tunnel ended up being used being an entry in U.K. by the prohibited refugee and shelter searchers giving a little sensible discrepancy over sitting of camping of Sangatte refugee and it got closed in 2002.

Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge

Facts and figures

The dimensions of the bridge defied all imagination. The total length of the bridge is 8,981ft or 2,737 m. The main span between the two enormous towers is 4,200 ft or 1,280 meters long, making the Golden Gate Bridge the worlds largest suspension bridge, a record that would stand until 1964 when the Verrazano-Narrows bridge in New York was completed.

Prediksibet – The two beautiful Art Deco towers are almost 820ft or 250 meters tall, of which more than 20 meters is below the sea level. The road, six lanes and 90 ft / 27m wide is an amazing 220 ft or 67 meters above the water level. It is supported by enormous cables, anchored in hundreds of bars locked into concrete blocks with a pulling power of 25 million kg. The two cables have a total length of 2,332 meters and a diameter of 90 cm. They are woven from 27,572 threads of steel with a total length that equals three times the earths circumference.

Bell Rock Lighthouse

Bell Rock Lighthouse

Located in the North Sea across from the coast of Angus, Scotland is the Bell Rock Lighthouse, which is the oldest sea washed lighthouse in the world. It was constructed to keep ships from getting wrecked at Bell Rock Island. The Lighthouse stands 35 m high, with its light being visible from 35 statute miles away. It was built in a very difficult location and several people were killed in the process. But the masonry work was so well done that it has never been replaced or fixed even once in almost 200 years of its existence.

The Basket Building in Ohio

The Basket Building in Ohio

The Basket Building is one of the most amazing buildings of the world, situated in Ohio, United State, the main office of the Longabeger basket company. The Basket Building is built to resemble an regular shopping basket or a picnic basket, with handles held together. During the cold months, these handles are constantly heated to prevent snow and frost deposits in it.

The Basket Building is really a replica 160 times bigger of Longaberger’s Medium Market Basket. It’s 192 foot. long by 126 foot. wide at the bottom, up to 208-foot. long by 142-foot. wide in the roofline. It covers 25 acres, weighing 8,000 9,000 tons having a square footage of 180,000. The basket handles alone weigh almost 150 tons and therefore are constantly heated throughout the wintertime several weeks, to prevent snow and ice deposits developing in it.

The Basket Building

The Basket Building is built of stucco, a plaster type material that is produced from cement, sand and lime, applied on the steel structure.  Stucco supplies a hard, reliable, durable and inexpensive surface that needs little maintenance helping create the feel of a real Longaberger Basket.

Lynbet – Initially, Dave Longaberger wanted all the Longaberger structures to be formed like baskets, only the headquarters was finished until he die. After his dealth, further basket-formed structures were vetoed by his daughters.

But theh vision of Longarberger has inspired others in Ohio to mimic his bizarre style of architecture. The World’s Biggest Apple Basket, standing around over 29 ft tall are available in Frazeysburg, Ohio.
